Policemen crash racing to fire call

2008-10-06 00:00

A policeman responding to an emergency call was injured when the police van in which he and a colleague were travelling overturned in Alan Paton (Durban) Road near Woodburn Sports Ground yesterday afternoon.

The two policemen were racing to attend to a burning building in Timber Street in the city centre.

A traffic officer at the scene said the accident might have been caused by the wet road.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said one policeman who was injured was taken to St Anne’s Hospital.

According to fire department divisional officer Themba Mkhulisi, everything in a storeroom at the Kara Nicha food outlet was burnt.

He added, however, that there was not much damage to the building.

“It is not known what might have caused the fire … we are still investigating. However, no one was injured,” he said.
