Poor putting sinks Jared Harvey at 18th hole

2008-03-05 00:00

The 18th hole at Royal Durban proved to be the end of the line for KwaZulu-Natal hopes in the 2008 Glacier South African Amateur Matchplay Golf championship.

Both the surviving home-based players, Jared Harvey and Ryan de Beer, bowed out of contention in the second round yesterday morning.

For Harvey it must have been a great disappointment. As club champion at Royal Durban he probably had the best chance against Alpheus Kelapile.

With five holes to go in the 18-hole match he had carved for himself a three-hole lead.

But his age-old putting problem got the better of him on the 14th and he missed a relatively short putt to jangle his nerves.

That was when Alpheus Kelapile of Leopard Park took charge of the match and it was all square going up the last hole.

Harvey, clearly under the whip, eventually went out of bounds when he over-hit his approach to the green and Kelapile was through to the next round by a two-holes margin.

In the afternoon round, however, Kelapile was taken apart by P.G. van Zyl of Witbank and slumped to a two-holes defeat.

Ryan de Beer was also bundled out at the final hole by Ryan Clarke, son of former Springbok Neville Clarke, of Royal Johannesburg in a keenly contested game.

Clarke is currently ranked fourth in South African Amateur Golf.

In the biggest upset of the morning session the top-ranked golfer in the country, Dylan Frittelli of Irene, went out —- also a last-hole casualty—– by one to Steven Paine of the Strand.

Jacques Blaauw, who won the SA strokeplay championship at Pearl Valley, kept his hopes alive of a possible double by beating Nicol van Wyk of Durbanville (10th in SA rankings) two and one in the morning and then Jake Redman of Fancourt by a single hole.

The quarter-final draw for this morning is:

Michael Palmer (Bryanston) v Hugo Delport (SAPS Pretoria); Jacques Blaauw (Paarl) v Derik Ferreira (Centurion); PG van Zyl (Witbank) v Cameron Johnson (Milnerton); Adrian Ford (Durbanville) v Nigel Edwards (Wales).

Scores: Round 3:

Michael Palmer beat Steven Paine 2/1; Ryan Clarke lost to Hugo Delport 3/2; Jake Redman lost to Jacques Blaauw 1 up; Derik Ferreira beat JG Claassen 5/4; PG van Zyl beat Alpheus Kelapile 2 up; Cameron Johnston beat Werner Theart 2/1; Adrian Ford beat Ruan Botha 3/2; Okkie Strydom lost to Nigel Edwards 3/2. — Sapa
