Popular pupil dies from asthma

YEAR-END excitement that comes with the countdown to examinations while enjoying the last weeks of school with friends has been dampened by the death of a pupil at the Arthur Blaxall School.

The school is mourning the death of Senzo Mfusi (16), who died on his way to hospital from an asthma attack that he suffered while playing soccer with his mates on Monday afternoon.

According to school principal Desmond Frank, Senzo was a known asthmatic. He was playing soccer with his friends at around 5 pm when he had the attack and lost consciousness.

“Our medical sister tried to revive him, but unfortunately without success. Senzo was rushed to hospital but he died on the way there.”

Frank described Senzo as “very popular, strong in academics and a keen rower”.

“He was the type of child that could engage in various topics with ease, whether it was politics or sports. He was a well-informed [pupil] and certainly one of the most popular simply because he could interact with different age groups well. He made time to speak to the younger learners,” said Frank.

He said the whole school was in a state of shock as Senzo had been with them for the past four years. “The teachers, the boarding staff and the learners are all taking the news very badly. We are a family here and everyone is affected,” he added.

The Witness understands that Senzo lost his mother last year and his father had high hopes for him.

The school is trying to organise an inhouse memorial service.

Frank said they will be meeting with the family today, who are coming from Newcastle.

The burial will be on Saturday.
