Port Edward: Gunman kills lover, turns firearm on police chief

2011-08-16 00:00

A MAN shot and killed a young woman who lived with him and then attempted to shoot the station commander who tried to counsel the couple at the Mzamba police station outside Port Edward late yesterday afternoon.

According to police reports, the 25-year-old gunman is still at large after shooting and killing his 21-year-old partner. He then turned the firearm on the station commander, who managed to duck and escape from the office.

By the time police had responded to the sound of the gunshots the suspect had sped off in his vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, Brigadier Marinda Mills, said the victim had laid a charge of domestic violence against the suspect.

“She came to the station to ask police to escort her to their house to fetch her clothes. When they arrived at the house the suspect refused for her to take her clothes.” Police phoned the station commander, who asked them to bring the couple to the police station.

“This is how they had both ended up in his office. The station commander was counselling them when the suspect pulled out the gun and fired two shots at her upper body.”

The police went back to the suspect’s home to apprehend him. “He fired shots at the police and managed to evade arrest. We are still continuing our search for him,” said Mills.
