Port Edward: Portuguese Fest to feature food, fun, folk dancing

2011-07-13 00:00

THE Umtamvuna Area Tourism Committee and the Portuguese Association of KwaZulu-Natal will be hosting the annual Portuguese Mariners’ Festival in Port Edward on July 30.

The festival commemorates the arrival of the Portuguese in South Africa after their ship, the São João, sank off the coast of Port Edward in 1552. The São João was then the largest ship afloat, carrying spices, and other valuables from the East.

The festival coincides with the annual sardine run and promises great family entertainment, fun and music. The programme features DJs and live entertainment, Portuguese folk dancing, Idols 2010 finalist “Divine Diva” S’ Posh and lots more.

Portuguese cuisine, including peri-peri chicken, bifanas and prawn rissoles, will be prepared by members of the Portuguese Association.

The tourism stall will again sell tickets to the “Gold Rush” treasure hunt with the main prize this year a four-night cruise with Mediterranean Shipping Company for a family of four to the Portuguese Islands and Maputo, valued at R15 000.

Chefs from various local restaurants compete in The Fever Portuguese potjie competition, with festival visitors able to enter a competition to judge the best potjies.

Entry to the festival is free.
