Port Shepstone: Would-be robber nabbed in seconds

2011-10-17 00:00

PORT Shepstone police were too quick for a would-be robber whom they nabbed seconds after his crime on Friday.

Shenghui Zhang, a Chinese businessman was on his way to deposit money at a bank in the CBD when he was accosted by the robber.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the man grabbed at the sling of Zhang’s bag and removed the R14 000 that was inside.

“The complainant stopped a police vehicle that was passing by and alerted them as to what had happened.”

Sergeant Jonelle Naicker and constables Raphael Smithwick, Michael Ngwazi, Akesh Maharaj and Sbongisile Jubase got out of the vehicle and chased the suspect on foot.

“Our members tracked him down and he was arrested.” Police recovered a knife and the stolen cash.

“Mr Zhang was very relieved to receive back his stolen money.”

The 32-year-old suspect is in police custody and will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today.

Wiid warned business owners to be cautious when depositing money at this time of the year.

“Criminals are watching businesses and establish the routine of business owners when they go to the bank and when they return to their premises,” said Wiid. “Do not carry large amounts of cash on your person when alone,”
