Power costs: Residents invited to join march

2011-11-22 00:00

MSUNDUZI residents are invited to join a protest march tomorrow over exorbitant electricity costs that ignore the plight of the poor.

The march will start at noon from Dales Park in Mayor’s Walk and proceed to the City Hall where a memorandum will be given to Mayor Chris Ndlela.

It has been organised jointly by the PMB Electricity Action Group, trade union federation Cosatu, the local branch of the South African Communist Party and the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness (Pacsa).

The organisers in a statement yesterday said they were holding the march because they are fed up with the indifference of the municipality to the poor.

This includes the scrapping of the municipal services subsidies for the poor, the removal of thousands of people living in RDP houses from the list of beneficiaries of service subsidisation, and not supplying people with pre-paid meters with 200 kilowatts of free basic electricity.

However, what frustrated them even more was the municipality’s reluctance to meet, listen to, and respond to the concerns of the poor, the statement said. — WR.
