Power cut as district fails to pay

2014-02-06 00:00

THE Rosetta Water Purification Plant has had its electricity supply terminated after the uMgungundlovu District Municipality (UMDM) failed to pay Eskom for two months.

Disconnected since Tuesday, the reservoir is now on the brink of running empty, leaving residents in fear of no water supply.

UMDM manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said they were dismayed at the power cut as it was “out of the ordinary”.

Khuzwayo said payment was made yesterday morning as the invoice was delayed during the Christmas break.

“We have an on-principle agreement with Eskom not to cut such life-threatening operations for non-payment as there could be a genuine delay, like in this instance,” he said.

Khuzwayo said they would engage with Eskom within the next two weeks so that such an occurrence would not happen again. “There should be no service interruption as the reservoir is 40% full and will last for the next two days when the situation will revert back to normal.”

Ken Denysschen, DA councillor in the Mpofana Municipality, said the municipality had been in arrears for two months and was incurring a penalty interest that was a wasteful expenditure. “… it is wasteful expenditure not to pay on time. Now they are going to be charged a reconnection fee,” he said.
