Power cuts: robbers strike by candlelight

2008-04-14 00:00

LOAD shedding worked in favour of the five robbers who struck at Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Scottsville outlet on Friday evening and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to a police report, the unknown men came into the store posing as customers.

When the power went off a short while later due to a scheduled power cut in the area, staff members lit candles intending to continue serving the last few customers.

That was when two of the men pounced on the unsuspecting crowd, pointing firearms at them, while forcing the staff to the back of the store.

It is alleged that another two jumped over the counter, ransacking the tills, while the last suspect stood guard at the door.

Inspector Joey Jeevan said no shots were fired and no one was injured.

She appealed to businesses and the public to be extra vigilant during load-shedding periods and to take note of the schedules to avoid being in darkness in secluded areas during these times.

The men are reported to have fled the scene on foot, and no arrests have yet been made.
