Power outage: Fire at sub-station

2011-08-19 00:00

LAST night a fire burnt a primary electricity sub-station, resulting in several areas in the northern suburbs being left without electricity and sparking a lot of complaints from the residents in the affected areas.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma confirmed that a primary electricity sub-station was burning, affecting the Northdale, Newholmes and Woodlands areas.

“We do not know the reason for this as yet, but it is a serious problem,” said Zuma.

He said some people had been phoning to ask if this had anything to do with sabotage by the striking workers, however, he said they cannot confirm that as this stage because they do not know.

Zuma said last night: “Whatever has been burnt [now] has to be replaced, so people in the affected areas might not have electricity for the rest of the night. However, technicians are working on the problem.”
