‘Power situation very tight right now’

2014-12-05 00:00

BRACE yourself for more gloomy evenings and cold suppers.

Eskom warned yesterday that more load shedding is expected this week. The parastatal began load shedding across the country yesterday afternoon and indicated that this would continue until the weekend.

An official from the company’s media desk said the situation was precarious. “We have been running our diesel generators flat out and we are running on reserve energy. We are supposed to be using these during times of emergency but today [yesterday] we have been running them as part of our normal process.”

He said although the company tries to build up reserve during the weekends, those reserves are being fast depleted.

“The situation is very tight right now … We are already load shedding. We started at 4 pm [yesterday] and we have called on the municipalities to assist us. The situation will be more of the same [today] until the weekend.”

In a media statement, Eskom said the power system is expected to be constrained for the “foreseeable future”.

“The power system is exceptionally constrained due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations, depleted water reserves and logistical issues relating to diesel supplies …” it said.

THE updated schedule for load shedding in Pietermaritzburg is available on The Witness website at www.witness.co.za. Load-shedding schedules are available for Eskom direct customers on their website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/) and Eskom queries should be directed to their call centre on 086 003 7566.
