‘Power to the people, direct elections and strong democracy’

2011-04-27 00:00

The Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) believes that government should be answerable to the electorate.

An Azapo government will therefore ensure power is returned to the people by building a strong democracy and allowing voters to directly elect the president instead of voting for him or her through a party.

Azapo also believes abolishing the nine provinces will increase efficiency in governance and strengthen democracy. It would appoint administrators instead of provincial governments and have them answerable to the national government.

Azapo’s manifesto states, “Considering that it is now 15 years into democracy, our people definitely deserve better. It is on this basis that Azapo insists that ordinary citizens should assert themselves and ensure that their power is returned to them. What is required to achieve this noble goal is political will.”

Corruption and crime are major concerns for Azapo, and it proposes to outlaw civilian gun ownership, impose severe sentences for serious crimes, reinstate the Scorpions and crack down on corruption.

The education system needs to be addressed, and Azapo would want to see all children given compulsory education up to matric and taught in their mother tongue at foundation phase. It also aims to redress inequality at tertiary level and have all languages treated equally.

Healthcare and HIV and Aids need prioritising. The party will work to de-stigmatise HIV and make grants and medical treatment more widely available.

Azapo aims to build decent houses to eliminate homelessness, ensure there is a healthy relationship between local government, councillors and traditional leaders, and make essential services affordable for the poor and the unemployed.
