Premier clarifies his Ashburton house is not for sale

2013-07-15 00:00

EMPTY nest syndrome had forced KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize out of his house in Ashburton, which is not on the market, he says.

He was responding to a Weekend Witness report that he may soon be relinquishing his position as premier to take up his full-time job as ANC treasurer.

Mkhize said he had moved out of his Ashburton house more than a year ago, and was living in the family home at Willowfountain. He said he had tenants living at the Ashburton property.

The premier said his children had grown up and moved out, and the Ashburton home now felt too big; hence the decision to live in Willowfountain.

He said he had had to fend off prospective buyers and calm his concerned tenants since the article was published.

Questions about the house had been sent to Mkhize, but he had not replied to Weekend Witness by the time of going to press.

With the 2014 national elections looming, there is growing speculation that Mkhize may have to move to the ANC’s headquarters, Luthuli House, to build a war chest sooner than expected.
