Premier to take oath at stadium

2014-05-23 00:00

THE capital city will be abuzz on Monday for the inauguration of the Province’s Premier, Senzo Mchunu at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

For residents in the vicinity of the stadium there will be road closures, and access will be limited to pupils, workers and residents in the area. Alexandra Road from the Sasol garage in Alan Paton Road to Princess Margaret Drive will be closed as well as parts of College Road. Traffic police will be on hand to assist motorists and residents.

Msunduzi spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said she could not confirm the times of the closures as they were expecting to get the details from the security cluster today.

Meanwhile, the Msunduzi Executive Committee (Exco) was expected to make a tough call yesterday on whether to allow the premier to be driven around the pitch of the stadium. The request came from the planning committee who explained that they were aware that the pitch was regulated in terms of Fifa rules.

The planners consulted with the South African Football Association (Safa) who advised that it could be done. However, no heavy duty vehicles were to be used. Safa suggested the use of a light delivery vehicle to take the premier on his victory parade. During the earnest discussion, the idea of using a golf cart was tossed around. In the end, civic pride won the day. Exco member Bill Lambert said as Pietermaritzburg is the capital city, “let’s do it properly”.

The KZN premier will be driven around the stadium in a light delivery vehicle in front of a gathering of more than 10 000 people from all over the province who are expected to attend his inauguration.
