Premier’s aide voted ANC leader in Abaqulusi

THE former treasurer of the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal, Gugu Simelane-Zulu, was elected the new leader of the ANC in the Abaqulusi (Zululand) region during the party’s regional conference held at a Vryheid hotel at the weekend.

Among the 286 voting delegates who attended the conference, Simelane-Zulu received 158 votes, beating Patience Khaba by 28 votes.

Simelane-Zulu, a youth affairs manager in the Office of the Premier, replaces regional chairperson Mkhawuleni Khumalo, who did not stand for this year’s elections.

The election of Simelane-Zulu in this powerful position will serve as a consolation after her humiliating loss to Mthandeni Dlungwane for the position of KZN ANCYL provincial chairperson last year.

Before the conference there was reportedly robust canvassing among supporters of the two factions.

Mashiya Radebe became the new deputy regional chairperson after narrowly beating Thabisile Lushaba, while Victor Dlamini was victorious against Elias Tshigeng for the regional secretary position. Napoleon Ncala became the regional treasurer and Sfiso Dlamini became the deputy regional secretary, beating SA Communist Party spokesperson Churchill Sibanyoni in the contest for the position.

The conference was opened on Saturday by provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala, who warned delegates against voting for candidates who use money to influence their election. He denounced divisions, cliques and cabalistic tendencies harmful for the ANC.
