Pretoria to tackle KZN settlements

2013-07-30 00:00

THE national government has taken another step towards trying to manage Pietermaritzburg’s mushrooming informal settlements.

The national Human Settlements Department has contracted Kayamandi Development Services to assess all informal settlements as part of the process of addressing the problem.

According to the Msunduzi Municipality, there are 75 informal settlements in and around Pietermaritzburg.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the number was growing daily and welcomed the government’s action.

KZN ANC chairperson Senzo Mchunu said at the weekend that he wanted slums to be eradicated from the province, including Msunduzi’s Jika Joe settlement.

After all, South Africa’s democratic revolution was about liberating people from living in slums, he said.

Once the assessment was finalised, the next step would be to prepare detailed project plans to be used to obtain funding from the provincial Human Settlements Department.

This will be for upgrades, the provision of basic services or, where necessary, the relocation of informal settlements.

When the national informal settlement’s support programme was first mooted in 2011, Msunduzi was one of 43 municipalities prioritised to benefit.
