Priest: male murder suspect released

2009-01-26 00:00

The 25-year-old man arrested last week for questioning in connection with the murder of 83-year-old priest, Father Eldred Leslie, was released yesterday without making a court appearance.

Prosecutors and police said there was insufficient evidence to hold the suspect pending further investigations.

The man — who has no fixed abode — was caught near Leslie’s home in Bulwer street a day after the murder on the night of Wednesday, January 21.

Police allegedly acted on information that the man was linked to the killing. It is believed the priest used to give the suspect food.

Leslie was known for his kindness to street children and other destitute people, to whom he regularly gave food and/or financial help.

The Traditional Catholic priest of the Chapel of our Lady and St Michael in Bulwer Street was found stabbed to death in his, home, which is part of the chapel premises. Police were called to the scene by his nephew who had gone to check on him. He noticed the doorknob on the priest’s bedroom door had blood on it and called the police without entering the room.

Police found the victim on the floor and said he had sustained severe head wounds caused by a sharp instrument.

Anyone with information that could help the police with their investigation is asked to contact Inspector Robin Mays at 082 413 8474.
