Primary schools step up security

2015-02-26 00:00

FOLLOWING the murder of a five-year-old girl who was abducted from her school on Monday, some primary schools in Pietermaritzburg have upped their security, using teachers to safeguard their pupils.

Athandiwe Dumakude of Berg Street Primary School was found on Monday afternoon, bound and stabbed, in a secluded forest in Woodlands, 20 km away from her home in Sweetwaters.

She was last seen outside the school in the CBD by sweet seller Johanna Williams just before 1 pm.

A number of schools said they are not allocated security guards by the Department of Education, but provided these themselves.

Mountain Rise Primary School principal Vasu Soobryan said the school could not guarantee the safety of the pupils long after school closes for the day. “Our school doesn’t have an aftercare programme but the school has placed a teacher to ensure that the kids remain in the school premises after school, until 2.30 pm,” he said.

Athandiwe’s aunt Gugu Dumakude said the death of her  niece has affected the family badly.

Athandiwe will be buried on Saturday at Ezimbomvini in Sweetwaters, said Dumakude.
