Prisoner jailed for killing his rapist

2011-09-14 00:00

A PRISONER at the Port Shepstone police station has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for the murder of another inmate after he was allegedly sexually assaulted in the holding cells.

In December last year he repeatedly stabbed Dennis Simphiwe Gambushe in the upper body during a revenge attack.

Port Shepstone police discovered Gambushe’s body in one of their police cells on the night of December 21. The knife used for the murder was recovered.

The prisoner was arrested and charged with the murder on January 13.

An investigation established that Gambushe had sexually assaulted the perpetrator.

Five years of the 12-year sentence were suspended on condition he is not charged or convicted of any criminal offence in that time.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the investigation was ordered to find out why the inmate had a weapon.

“The investigation came out inconclusive. There was no case of negligence found.”

Wiid said that all parcels received by inmates are thoroughly examined.

“We have had no similar incidents since this case.”
