Prisoners adopt Tamboville pupils

2010-10-12 00:00

ABOUT 100 needy pupils from McCarthy Primary School, a school in the informal settlement of Tamboville in Pietermaritzburg, received groceries and clothing from the New Prison inmates last week.

The prison has adopted the school to provide for its vulnerable pupils, as most of them are orphans and come from poor families.

Correctional Service’s Cornelius Abersalie told The Witness the pupils will be the prison’s responsibility. “It is tearful to see children happy and realising that whatever we do will lead them to greater heights. The inmates decided to spend their pocket money on these children ...” said Abersalie.

The school’s sponsorships co-ordinator and teacher, Thokozani Zuma, said: “The groceries and clothing will help these young pupils not to be lured into crime and drug abuse. If they are hungry it would be easy for them to use drugs, steal and get arrested.”

McCarthy Primary School came under the spotlight last year when reports of its overcrowded tin-shack classrooms, broken windows and muddy floors made news in The Witness.
