2012-12-21 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Former Proteas star batsman Herschelle Gibbs is in the hunt for a new South African franchise for the upcoming Pro20 series.

Gibbs, who will turn 39 next February, confirmed on Twitter yesterday that he would be leaving Cape Town and the Cape Cobras, where he has played for the past 23 years, starting when he was still at school at Bishops.

Gibbs tweeted: “Got a few options who to play for in our T20 comp back home in SA. Tough decision. I haven’t had to make one in 23 years....”

When quizzed as to why he was leaving the Cobras, Gibbs replied: “Cobras didn’t accept the proposal.”

The domestic Pro20 series starts in February.

Gibbs, currently playing in the Big Bash in Australia, has represented a number of teams in his career, including South Africa, Cape Cobras, Deccan Chargers, Durham, Glamorgan, Khulna Royal Bengals, Mumbai Indians, Northern Districts, Perth Scorchers, Western Province and Yorkshire.

He played 23 T20 internationals for South Africa, averaging 18,18, with a highest score of 90 not out.

He has also played 157 Twenty20 matches, scoring 3 679 runs at an average of 25,90, with an undefeated 101 his highest score.
