Probe demanded: Unions attack Transport Dept

2013-01-02 00:00

MORE organisations have echoed the widespread condemnation of last week’s chaotic and deadly recruitment drive by the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department.

Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho said the trade union federation wanted an independent commission of inquiry to be set up with immediate effect.

All those implicated in such findings should face the full might of the law, he said.

“We further demand that all [recruitment] processes be put on hold to allow such an inquiry to do its work without hindrance.

“We regret to say as Cosatu that we have warned about the dire consequences of high levels of unemployment in this country.

“We have consistently cautioned that we are sitting over a ticking time bomb.”

Kwenza Nxele of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union called for the immediate suspension of the department’s recruitment team and an open investigation.

SA National Civic Organisation spokesperson Dumsani Mthale said the process was flawed.

This week, the Inkatha Freedom Party called for Transport MEC Willies Mchunu’s head.
