Problem school: CCTV a possibility

2013-05-13 00:00

THE Kwazulu-Natal Education Department has brought in security experts to make recommendations about what security measures to put in place at Umlulama High School in Hopewell.

This comes after a number of violent incidents involving learners at the school, the most recent last month.

Siyanda Sithole (16), who was being pursued by panga-wielding pupils, was saved by the school’s cook, who closed the kitchen door on his attackers when Sithole ran into the kitchen. He was stabbed twice in the back and once in the shoulder.

Zwelihle Mkhize (17) was rescued by a teacher after he was stabbed in the back three times. Both learners were treated in hospital and released.

Department head Dr Nkosinathi Sishi said: “The experts will have to compile a report on what can be done in this school, and at what cost …”

He said installing CCTV cameras at the school would be the department’s last resort.

“We have tried to put cameras in other schools and this created more problems for us. We will wait for the experts’ reports after they have made their inspection at the school.”

School governing body member Robert Kunene said they are not happy with the situation at the school.“This is beyond our powers. When we make suggestions they are turned down by the department.”
