Produce thieves’ getaway van a bit of a lemon

2010-02-27 00:00

CAMPERDOWN police arrested a 40-year-old woman who they found in a crashed minibus surrounded by stolen lemons and chillies.

KZN police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the police were alerted to the theft of 700 kg of produce when a resident of an Eston farm noticed two people loading 50 kg nylon bags into a minibus in the early hours of yesterday.

On their way to the area the police came across a minibus fitting the description of the thieves’ vehicle, parked on the side of the road in Camperdown.

On investigation they found the woman inside, surrounded by 13 bags of lemons and two others of chillies.

The woman told the police that the driver lost control of the vehicle on a bend, drove into a ditch and came to a standstill.

He then ran away, leaving her behind.

The woman was arrested and will appear in court soon.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the woman sustained slight injuries.

Attempts to contact the farm’s owner, Kevin Prett, were unsuccessful.

Police are hot on the trail of the other thief.
