Property valuations to resume

2013-09-04 00:00

WORK has begun on the preparation of the new general valuations of properties roll within the Msunduzi Municipality. Residents are asked to be aware that data collectors will come calling to gather information. Not all homes will be visited, just those where existing records are incomplete.

Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said the data collectors will be wearing clearly visible and identifiable name tags.

He said the current exercise is linked to the Property Rates Act that requires a municipality to prepare a general valuation roll every four years. This means that the municipality must have a register of properties together with how much each has been valued at. The value is derived from a host of factors, including information gathered by the data collectors, which will include the number of rooms in the main building or number of outbuildings on the property.

Zuma appealed to property owners to allow data collectors access to their properties for the purpose of assisting the municipality in acquiring accurate information on each property.

Rates paid on properties are guided by their valuation and rates increases are determined during the annual budgeting process.

The legislation allows the public to participate in the process with opportunities to comment on both the valuations and the rating of properties. Public meetings will be held and there will be notices going out and advertised in the local media calling for interested and affected parties to comment.

Anyone with questions on the authenticity of the collectors or any other property data-related questions, should please phone 033 392 2499.
