Prosecutor gets life in jail for rape

2014-06-05 00:00

A NEWCASTLE prosecutor has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a teenager.

Remmington Zamokuhle Ngema (42) was sentenced on Tuesday after a two-year trial.

The KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Moipone Noko, welcomed Ngema’s sentence.

“This sentence shows the zero tolerance approach of the justice system to criminality.

“It should serve as a deterrent, even to our own staff, that all perpetrators of such heinous crimes will be held accountable,” she said.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, KZN spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, said Ngema had applied for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence.

This was postponed to August and he would remain in custody until then.

Meanwhile, Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi expressed confidence in the justice system following the sentencing of three child rapists in the province, including Ngema, to lengthy prison terms over the past 48 hours.

“These sentences have been handed down at an opportune moment where we observe Child Protection Week, a time set aside by our government to raise awareness about the plight of children, including sexual abuse,” she said.

Thusi said she hoped that victims of abuse would be encouraged by the sentences to report cases of abuse.

“I think the police and our courts have proved that they are on the side of victims of abuse,” she said.
