Prosecutor to decide on parking spat

2012-08-27 00:00

A SENIOR public prosecutor will have to decide whether to prosecute in a case of a spat over parking at Liberty Midlands Mall on Women’s Day.

The case, opened by Louis Joubert, is being investigated by police.

On August 19, The Witness reported that Joubert (48), of Pretoria, was in Pietermaritzburg with his family when he was allegedly assaulted by another motorist during an argument about a parking bay at the mall. He later opened a case.

The motorist, Shakile Saktu has also opened a counter charge of assault and damage to property against Joubert. Speaking to The Witness, Saktu said: “The matter is being handled by my lawyer and I don’t want to jeopardise the case. I don’t want to make any comments as racism is a big thing in this case.”

Mall spokesperson Minolo Chetty said they are conducting their own investigation into the matter.

“Police were called and the matter was referred to them. We are not in a position to comment on action taken by either party in this regard, however, any further findings will be referred to the SAPS to assist them with their investigations.”

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they are investigating a counter charge of assault and malicious damage to property. “The driver of the other vehicle alleges that he was assaulted by Mr Louis Joubert during the argument. No arrest has been made. On completion of the investigation, both cases will be forwarded to the senior public prosecutor at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for a decision,” Zwane said.
