‘Proteas’ best win in a decade’

AUCKLAND — The Proteas’ performance in the World Cup quarter-finals against Sri Lanka was one of the team’s best of the decade, according to Jacques Kallis.

The South Africans skittled Sri Lanka for 133 and knocked the winning target after 18 overs — for only the loss of Hashim Amla — on Wednesday.

“This was one of the team’s best performance in more than a decade for several reasons. First, because of the magnitude of the match, which in the past few times has been for us a problem. This time the team delivered when it mattered,” said Kallis in a column in several Indian newspapers.

“The second reason is the quality of the bowling and fielding. South Africa prides itself still on having an aggressive bowling attack, but rarely before have they been so consistent in their implementation.

“Dale Steyn was in a much higher gear than in the recent past, Morné Morkel did not bowl a poor delivery, Kyle Abbott has shown he’s much more than a back-up bowler and Imran Tahir won his second man of match award. In addition, JP Duminy now has a World Cup hat-trick to his name.”

Kallis, however, noted that the Sri Lankans were far from their best.

“It was like they were scared to play their cricket. I could recognise it, because it’s something that we’ve done in the past,” said Kallis.

“With this victory, South Africa has sent a clear warning and the rest of the teams would have taken notice of it.”
