Proteas leave Oz in a spin

2009-03-29 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s inexperienced attack turned in a fine performance as they throttled Australia to win the second Pro20 international by 17 runs and clinch the series 2-0 at Centurion last night.

The Proteas had laboured their way to what looked like a below-par 156, with debutant Roelof van der Merwe slicing and smearing his way to an entertaining 48, which included four sixes.

Robin Peterson (34) was the only other batsman to make a significant contribution as South Africa gobbled up a startling 50 dot balls in their 120-ball innnings.

Van der Merwe lifted the tempo by taking 23 runs off an over from the usually miserly Nathan Bracken.

Australia started their chase with relative ease, going at above the required rate until David Warner missed a full toss from Albie Morkel.

Yusuf Abdullah then induced an edge from Ricky Ponting for his first international wicket, and despite a cameo from the on-form David Hussey, Australia’s innings slowly ran out of steam.

Van der Merwe added a run out and the vital wicket of Hussey to cap a memorable debut on his home ground.

The spin trio of Johan Botha, Peterson and Van der Merwe were key for the Proteas, who will now be favourites for the upcoming five-match ODI series, which starts at Kingsmead on Friday.
