Protest: Samwu march against Salga appeal

2012-10-16 00:00

THE South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in KwaZulu-Natal will be embarking on a protest march on October 26, said Samwu’s Msunduzi deputy chairperson Rocky Madondo yesterday.

The march will be in protest against a decision by the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to file for leave to appeal the wage curve victory Samwu had secured in June.

Samwu had won a Labour Court battle for Salga to increase workers’ salary scales, but Salga is appealing the judgment.

The court upheld a wage curve agreement between the collective bargaining parties, signed in April 2010, dealing with different categories of municipalities.

Under the agreement, some workers would receive back pay from September 2009.

Madondo said they will be meeting with Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi today to discuss the issue of the wage curve agreement.

If the nationwide strike takes off this week, Msunduzi will not be taking part until October 26.
