Proudly Pietermaritzburg swings into action

2011-02-15 00:00

PROUDLY Pietermaritzburg swung into action yesterday as teams began cleaning up two of the main routes into the city, Alan Paton Avenue and Chatterton Road.

Proudly Pietermaritzburg is the name selected for the Clean City Project initiated by Guy Smith, a director of the legal firm Venn, Nemeth and Hart, towards the end of last year.

Yesterday’s clean-up was done by employees of Mdu Garden Services and Landscaping equipped with two brushcutters provided by Pietermaritzburg Power Products and wearing distinctive red overalls provided by Protecto-wear.

Proudly Pietermaritzburg has identified four main routes into Pietermaritzburg from the N3 that need cleaning up — Alan Paton Avenue, New England Road, Chatterton Road and Old Howick Road. “Once this is done we will start looking at some of the public spaces in the centre of the city,” says Smith.

Proudly Pietermaritzburg has appointed a steering committee and also chosen a committee to investigate the formation of a business improvement district (Bid). A Bid is an area, such as a city block, in which businesses pay an extra levy to finance the area’s improvement. A Bid system already works successfully in Cape Town. “We hope to work on getting the first Bid district up and operational during the course of the next 12 months,” says Smith.

An inaugural meeting of Proudly Pietermaritzburg — then called the Clean City Project — was held last November. “Almost without exception, all 60-plus people who attended have responded to our request to either make a financial contribution, offer their skills, or offer to help in one way or another,” says Smith.

“If people want to get Pietermaritzburg back to what it was they must accept it’s no longer a case of ‘we pay rates so the municipality must do it’. If they think that, they are living in dreamland.”

“WE want to get 12 major sponsors at R5 000 per month, 50 companies at R1 000, and a thousand individuals at R100 a month. That will give us R210 000. We can really do something with a sustainable income, said Smith.”

A bank account has been opened for the Proudly Pietermaritzburg initiative, which will be operated by Venn, Nemeth and Hart, and all funds will be paid into this account. The account details are:
