Province on the hunt for new tighthead

2014-08-27 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Western Province are hunting the services of a new tighthead prop for next year’s Super Rugby competition.

This comes after Springbok tighthead Frans Malherbe suffered yet another serious injury.

Malherbe fractured his ankle playing for the Boks against Argentina at the weekend and has been sidelined for the remainder of the year. The prop also had an ankle issue last year and missed a big part of the Stormers’ 2014 Super Rugby campaign due to concussion.

According to yesterday’s Cape Times, the other tightheads at WP — Pat Cilliers and Brok Harris — are set to move overseas at the end of the Currie Cup. This has necessitated the union to hunt for a new tighthead.

Coach Allister Coetzee said he spoke to director of rugby Gert Smal on Sunday after news broke of Malherbe’s injury. He said Smal is hard at work trying to lure an adequate tighthead to Cape Town.

While Malherbe is expected to be fit for next year’s Super Rugby competition, adding another tighthead would be a wise decision for the often injury-ravaged Stormers.
