Provincial Pro20: Easterns beat KZN Inland by six wickets

2013-04-08 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team were beaten by six wickets with 24 balls remaining in the CSA Provincial Pro20 match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday.

After winning the toss, Inland scored 105 for nine in their 20 overs and Easterns overhauled the target with four overs and six wickets to spare to win with a bonus point. By the sixth over, Inland were three wickets down for 11 runs before opener Tyler Lortan, who top-scored with 23 off 34 balls, and Ruhan Pretorius (17 off 15 balls) added the innings’ biggest partnership of 34 runs.

However, wickets fell at regular intervals as Johan Fourie, who took four for 20 in his maximum four overs, and the disciplined Easterns bowling attack kept a tight rein on the Inland innings.

Opening bowler Dillon Stanley took two for 21 in his four overs, while Vincent Moore’s four overs went for a miserly 14 runs and Israel Hlengani took one for 17 in his allotted four.

Captain, opening batsman and wicketkeeper Tumelo Bodibe (30) and JP Kok (37*) were the mainstays of Easterns’ successful run chase, while Yusuf Abdullah (one for 20 in four), captain Kyle Nipper (nought for 19 in four) and the rest of the bowling attack made a go of it, but the Inland

total was not challenging enough.

Meanwhile, the three-day match ended in a draw on Saturday.

Inland made 386 for seven declared in their first innings, to which Easterns replied with 248 for eight declared.

Beginning the final day on 37 for one in their second innings, a healthy lead of 175, Inland went on to declare at 168 for five, setting Easterns a challenging target of 307 to win the match.

Easterns nearly made it, reaching 294 for seven by the time the overs ran out.
