Public urged to support SA riders

THE UCI BMX World Championships get serious today as the “elites” and “junior elites” do battle at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg in an attempt to reach the finals of their respective categories.

There has been a positive response from locals during the first two days of the event, but event director Max Cluer has urged members of the public to come out and show their support for the South African riders over the weekend.

“People who decide to come down here this weekend will see how serious the sport is,” Cluer stated.

“These guys have gone through some big falls over the last two days. They are serious athletes.”

Cluer said that today will see the championships being broadcast around the world as the elites compete against each other.

“It really has been great to see so many international media at this event,” said Cluer.

“It shows that there is a massive interest and that this is a massive event.

“This is a big call to all South Africans out there to come with their vuvuzelas and flags and lend their support to this truly historic event,” he added.
