Pubs pull green, gold and rainbow army

2011-09-12 00:00

RUGBY fans donned the green and gold and flocked to pubs around tPietermaritzburg yesterday to support the Springboks in their Rugby World Cup opener against Wales in Wellington.

Pub owners were laughing all the way to the bank.

Greg Adley, the owner of Keg & Hedgehog in Townbush Road, said his business was booming.

“The number of customers tripled for me [yesterday] and they are enjoying the game and I hope that this will go on until the end of the World Wup.”

Adley said he has put up seven large screens for fans to watch the games.

Rugby is also well supported in the townships, and in Imbali several fans were walking around in green and gold gear.

Imbali 033 Lifestyle was packed with fans rooting for the Boks, the defending champions, to bring the trophy home again.

Mjy Ngcobo said he is confident the Boks will make the country proud.

The pub’s manager, Bongani Mhlongo, said the rainbow nation is represented in his pub when the games are screened.

“We hope that the fans will come in numbers as they did during the [football] world cup.

“We are also inviting supporters via SMSes and they have a VIP area that supporters can book for private viewing of games,” said Mhlongo.
