THE last day of school turned to great sorrow when a Grade 11 pupil died in an accident in Amanzimtoti yesterday afternoon.

The pupil was killed when the bakkie he was driving overturned in Bernadotte Street, when it hit the kerb.

Eight pupils, believed to be from Kingsway High School, were travelling on the bakkie at the time of the accident.

Santi Steinmann of Netcare 911 said that the pupil was already dead when the paramedics arrived at the scene.

“When the bakkie overturned, it seems that the deceased was ejected out of the bakkie when it overturned. Four other pupils, who were also on the bakkie, sustained minor injuries,” Steinmann told The Witness.

In another accident, one person died and six others were injured when two vehicles collided on the N2 near Sunningdale on Tuesday night.

Steinmann said, “Among the injured there were three young girls, aged nine months old, seven years old and nine years old.

“The nine-month-old baby was in a critical condition and required advanced life support intervention at the scene.”
