Pupils and driver hurt in collision

FIFTEEN pupils survived a harrowing accident yesterday afternoon when the taxi they were travelling in collided with a truck on Khan Road.

KZN’s ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the pupils sustained multiple injuries, the taxi driver suffered critical injuries and the truck driver was unhurt.

Emergency services had to free the taxi driver from the wreckage.

Banks said it is unclear how the accident occurred.

A woman was left severely injured yesterday afternoon after she was hit by a car at the intersection of Hoosen Haffajee and Retief streets.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said it is believed the victim was using a pedestrian crossing when the car struck her.

“When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the injured woman at the roadside, after she had been carried to the road shoulder by passers-by,” said Wicks.

He said the woman was in a serious but stable condition and was stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital.

In Durban, an officer from the Metro Police sustained minor injuries when a car struck him near the West and Gardiner street intersection yesterday afternoon.

“It is believed that the [officer] had his back to traffic when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the car fled the scene,” said Wicks.
