Pupils being made to clean toilets

2010-07-27 00:00

PUPILS at Edendale’s Caluza Primary School are being made to clean toilets, and a parent has raised a concern that this may have health implications for the children.

A mother of two, who wanted her name withheld to protect her children, said the pupils at the school take turns to clean the toilets.

While she has nothing against the work ethic that the teachers at the school may be trying to instil, she said, she believes that since parents pay school fees, cleaners should be employed.

She said she is worried that the children are not provided with gloves, but this was disputed by the Education Department. “My concern is that there are sickly children, like one of mine, who need extra care. And the school would be aware of that. But up until last term, the child was still cleaning toilets.”

Department spokesperson Mbali Thusi confirmed there are no cleaners at the school. She said that while it is true the pupils are made to wash toilets, they are given gloves to “perform such duties”.

“The community chose to employ a security guard, paid by the school governing, body instead of a cleaner.”

The principal will be meeting with the SGB to address the matter, she added.
