Pupil’s death to be probed

2015-02-24 00:00

THE Tongaat Primary School pupil who fell two storeys while at school earlier this week, died on Thursday night.

Sizwe Bewu (7) allegedly fell through a gap in the second floor railings, sustaining a fatal head injury. He was initially taken to King Edward Hospital and then transferred to Albert Luthuli in Durban.

The Department of Education has intimated that they are yet to look at whether the accident constituted negligence.

But Tongaat residents have called the school out for being negligent claiming they had the entire holiday period to fix any broken railings.

Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said: “At face value we have heard the boys were just playing. But once there is a loss of life we need to be thorough about our investigation.

“If it was purely an accident then we need to see how it can be avoided in the future. We are asking for calm from the schooling community. Give the family space to mourn.”
