Pupils get their kicks in 'do it day' soccer clinic

2009-10-08 00:00

KHARINA Secondary school, four goals; Maritzburg United, zero. That was the score after Kharina Secondary played a soccer match against Maritzburg United yesterday.

They also received a soccer lesson from coach Gordon Igesund during a coaching clinic held at school for the Do It Day initiative.

The initiative is a project piloted by the Greater Good, an NGO based in Cape Town. It encourages organisations to implement a community project.

Locally, Old Mutual partnered with Maritzburg United to organise a coaching clinic in two schools in the city.

They hosted the first coaching clinic at the Wardley Stadium in Edendale for the Mzamweni High School and a second one at the Kharina Secondary School.

Ranjin Bharath, sales manager at Old Mutual, said they had chosen a soccer clinic as their project for this year because soccer is a topical issue. He described the initiative as a huge success.

Brendan Mthembu, a pupil in the school who played against United, said coach Igesund had taught him a lot.
