‘Pupils should register early’

2011-01-17 00:00

PARENTS should register their children timeously so that effective teaching can begin on the first day of school.

That was the plea made by the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu), who said that while most former model C schools would have begun registration in September and finalised admissions by the end of the year, township and rural schools will be flooded with parents and pupils trying to enrol on the first day of school.

“Although teachers in these schools try their best to have pupils registered in the previous year, they have to do the work themselves as township and rural schools do not have administrative staff. This adds to the teachers’ workload as they also have to set exam papers, monitor exams, mark papers and write school reports,” Sadtu said in a statement.

Coastal region schools open on Wednesday.

The union called on the Education Department to provide quality development programmes for teachers, a functioning support system — both at district and provincial level, to fill vacant posts, and get funds to schools in time.
