Pupils stone officials reinstating witchcraft-accused principal

2008-11-07 00:00

MATRICULANTS at a Newcastle school will have to write examinations at the Amajuba Education District Office hall for the remainder of their exams, to ensure that there are no further disruptions following a violent outbreak at the school on Tuesday, the Education Department has said.

Pupils threw stones at department officials who were there to reinstate a displaced principal accused of witchcraft. Three departmental officials were hurt and the school was shut down by department heads.

In a statement released to the media, the department said the principal was removed to allow for the investigation into allegations of mismanagement and witchcraft levelled against him. The principal’s name was not released.

The statement added that the department had found no wrongdoing to warrant the principal’s removal.

Education MEC Ina Cronje and the superintendent-general, Cassius Lubisi, said they condemned the display of violence in the strongest possible terms and will work with the police against those involved.
