Pursuing a dream

FOUR new films open today in the city: Dreamgirls at Nu Metro; The Pursuit of Happyness at CineCentre and Ster Kinekor; Unhitched at Ster Kinekor and Barnyard at CineCentre.

Dreamgirls, directed by Bill Condon, comes with eight Oscar nominations. It stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Jennifer Hudson. It is the film version of the Broadway musical set in the early sixties to mid-seventies and follows the rise of a trio of singers, The Dreamettes, based on Diana Ross and the Supremes. They are discovered at a talent contest and offered a chance to become the backing group for James “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy).

Barnyard is directed by Steve Oedekerk and is an animated coming-of-age movie, set in a barnyard. The old bull dies and his son has to face up to his demons to take over and fight off the coyotes. Reviews have been uniformly bad and all remark on the curious fact that all the cattle, bulls and cows alike, have udders. Voices include Kevin James, Courteney Cox, Danny Glover and Sam Elliott.

Gabriele Muccino directs The Pursuit of Happyness which stars Will Smith as a salesman who decides to chuck his job and take a six-month unpaid internship with a stockbroker. His wife (Thandie Newton) leaves him and he has to cope with his small son as well. Loosely based on a true story about the pursuit of big bucks, reviews suggest that it is a traditional Hollywood heartwarmer.

Unhitched was released in 2005 under the title The Best Man. Unhitched seems to be the DVD title that is being used here. Stefan Schwartz directs Stuart Townsend, Amy Smart and Seth Green in what is a routine romantic comedy about a writer who is asked to be a friend's best man and falls for the bride.
