PwC ranks Johannesburg high

2014-08-25 00:00

THANKS in part to O.R. Tambo International Airport and the Gautrain, Johannesburg now ranks 23 among 30 cities analysed worldwide.

In the sixth edition of the PwC in the “Cities of Opportunity” report, Johannesburg scored tops with the most flights that departed on time and also received high marks for its business-friendly policies.

Egoli performed well in terms of the competitive cost of doing business, its highest ranking across the 10 indicators, moving up a respectable three places to finish third overall, ahead of every city except Los Angeles and Chicago.

The PwC report ranked 30 cities around the world based on 10 key performance indicators, including demographics and livability, innovation and intellectual capital, transportation and infrastructure, city gateway access and economic clout, among others.

Johannesburg had the second lowest cost of business occupancy; sixth lowest total corporate tax rate and ease of entry; ninth place in shareholder protection — tying with London again this year. In a surprise move, Johannesburg climbed five places to number 10 in intellectual property protection.
