Quick cops foil robbers

2008-02-19 00:00

SPEEDY work by quick-thinking police led to the arrest of five suspected robbers who were en route to Pinetown, foiling an imminent robbery.

Captain Debbie O’Brien said police detectives from Umlazi, Inspector Bongani Sithole and Sergeant Valentine Gama, received information that the suspects were going to commit armed robbery.

“They quickly arranged for tactical back-up and waited for the suspects’ vehicle, which was spotted on the N3,” she said.

Police stopped the vehicle at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza.

“There were five suspects inside. One of the suspects reached for the cubby and police fired two shots,” she said.

One suspect was hit on his right thumb and was treated by paramedics.

O’Brien said police found a loaded revolver and a pistol when they searched the vehicle.

“Fingerprints were taken from the scene. Police are trying to establish if the suspects are linked to other cases,” she said.

The men were charged with illegal possession of firearms and will appear in court today.

O’Brien praised the quick work of the policemen.
