Quins punish clumsy PMB side

THE Maritzburg Varsity first XV only have themselves to blame for their disappointing 49-18 defeat against Harlequins on the Bluff in Durban at the weekend.

“We were our own worst enemies,” Varsity hooker and captain Justin Meanwell told The Witness yesterday.

“Quins capitalised on our mistakes, which included missing our touch kicks and poor defensive lines, and that tells the story.”

Meanwell added, though, that despite Varsity’s disappointing performance, the scoreline wasn’t a fair reflection of play.

At Woodburn Stadium, KZN First Division South side PMB Elephants were outmuscled up front against a fiery Richards Bay pack of forwards, and this contributed to their disappointing 29-5 defeat.

To their credit, though, the Elephants woke up after the change-over and had a much better second half after being down 22-0 in the first half.

Meanwhile, high-flying Hillcrest’s unbeaten run in the KZN First Division South season came to a crashing halt when they were beaten 27-26 by the Ballito Dolphins, who were playing at their intimidating home ground on the Dolphin Coast.

The result means that unbeaten KZN First Division South log leaders PMB Collegians will encounter a hurting Hillcrest line-up at their formidable Botha’s Hill home base this Friday night.

Hillcrest, who are coached by Vodacom Cup-winning former KZN Wildebeest captain Jonno Brayley and assisted by former Bok centre Pieter Muller, have very poor floodlights at their home ground. It is understood that Collegians president Tony Day is trying to convince Hillcrest that a league match of this importance should rather be played on Saturday afternoon in order to give the players on both sides every chance to make the clash a rugby spectacle.
