Quirky Quotes and Facts

Stats SA Deputy Director-General Risenga Maluleke on his boss Pali Lehohla’s trademark yellow suit: “I don’t know what the man in the yellow suit is trying to do to the country.”

Minister Trevor Manuel felt Lehohla could keep his yellow suit as there was a lot more work to be done in unpacking Census 2011. But he agreed with Maluleke that Lehohla should get rid of his blue shoes. Manuel rolled his arms in a gesture used by soccer fans calling for players to be substituted, saying: “We will recall the shoes”. The gesture has been adopted by ANC members calling for change in the party’s leadership.

Asked about the total cost of the census, Lehohla said it cost

R3,4 billion, adding that “ignorance would be more costly”.

Manuel: “For me, the surprises [were] … the lowering of the population growth rate … and how starkly the numbers come out in income distribution.

The figures confirm our worst fears and show us how much work there is to do.”

President Jacob Zuma: “These figures tell us that at the bottom of the rung is the black majority, who continue to be confronted by deep poverty, unemployment and inequality, despite the progress we have made since 1994.”

Zuma: “ … much remains to be done to further improve the … disparities that exist

between rich and poor”.
