R1 mln raised for Addington Children’s hospital

2014-03-11 00:00

JUST under a million rand was raised at the first annual fundraiser dinner to benefit the KZN Children’s Hospital last Friday evening.

While it might sound an impressive amount, there will have to be plenty more such dinners to raise the R349 million required to complete the restoration of the hospital that was closed during the 1980s.

“If we had all the money the hospital would be completed in 36 months tops,” says Dr Arthi Ramkissoon, a public health director at the University of the Witwatersrand, and the driving force behind the hospital’s restoration.

The national Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, was the guest speaker at the dinner.

The Addington Children’s Hospital opened in 1931 as a facility for all races but during the apartheid era proved a source of tension as it drew non-whites to what had become a white neighbourhood. The apartheid regime shut it down in 1984.

Following the hospital closure, the hospital’s seven buildings fell into disrepair.

The HIV-Aids epidemic and the high rates of tuberculosis in KwaZulu-Natal provided impetus to re-open the hospital.
