R1,2 mln for council paper

2011-10-24 00:00

ANC members of the Msunduzi executive committee (Exco) overrode objections by the Democratic Alliance and National Freedom Party to support the luanching of a newspaper for the council to communicate directly with the public to avoid “negative” reports in the press.

Marketing and communications manager Brian Zuma told Exco: “It is a known fact that we are not enjoying positive news coverage with mainstream media and that has been happening ever since we were put under provincial administration.

“No matter how much positive news one may feed to the press, the discretion still lies with them to decide what stories they cover and how they cover them,” said Zuma.

He said it is common and necessary practice in both the public and private sector to have a mouthpiece to tell positive stories that are seldom covered by the press.

The budget for the project is R1,2 million this financial year.

The DA’s Megan Chetty said the municipality does not need a newspaper; what it needs is to provide decent services to avoid negative publicity.
