‘RM’s fire officers efficient’

2013-05-31 00:00

RURAL Metro managing director Chris Gilbert has defended the competence of his fire-fighters.

The Witness published a report yesterday citing Msunduzi fire department officers alleging that Rural Metro fire-fighters were unable to handle fire-fighting equipment.

Gilbert said in a statement that Rural Metro Emergency Services were on standby at the request of Msunduzi Municipality during a work stoppage by municipal fire-fighting staff.

“This was in the interest of providing protection for our communities in Pietermaritzburg against loss of life, property and the environment,” he said.

Gilbert said: “I emphatically refute the allegations that Rural Metro fire-fighters are not trained to operate Msunduzi Municipality’s appliances and equipment.”

He emphasised that Rural Metro fire-fighters were internationally certified and had extensive fire-fighting and operational experience.

“… an efficient and effective fire service requires personnel with additional competencies other than operating appliances and equipment.”

Gilbert said their fire-fighters are well trained, disciplined and dedicated, and had responded timeously to call-outs.
